MLO 3: Secondary Culture
Learning Outcomes:
3.1 Students describe concepts of culture and use that understanding in their comparison of the target culture with the second culture.
3.2 Students will analyze and make connections among the ways of thinking and perspectives, behavioral practices and cultural products of a second culture.
Courses taken:
SPAN 308 - History and Culture of Aztlan: The Southwestern United States
Reflective Narrative:
3.1 I took SPAN 308 to fulfill this requirement. I was not very interested in taking this class since I consider the version of Mexican history that people born in the United States may have, distorted. Of course, we all have our own version of everything, but in this case the "victor" writes history and the U.S. defeated Mexico so that is that. I have to say that as the semester progressed I found very interesting standpoints on a variety of topics. During our online interactions we talked about many issues that are still current today, such as racism, immigration and others. As a Mexican-born person, it was interesting to read the impressions my classmates had of Mexico and Mexican people. Mexican-Americans, as they are called, have a totally different understanding of what being latino means. I learned that despite the fact that we have similar roots, they belong to a different world; I compared and contrasted "their" culture with my own and noticed that although we share similarities, there were perhaps more differences between our worlds and points of view in many respects.
3.2 Through the essays we wrote and shared, as well as the power point presentations we created; we discussed the origins of Mexico and the concept of Mexicans. We also learned about the Chicano movement, which came after the Mexican-American war and was intended to defend the rights of second and third-generation Mexicans. I did not learn much about Mexican culture but I learned interesting facts about those who have lived here their entire lives.
